L1 - Beginner

To enter into this level no previous knowledge of the language is required.

L2 – Beginner Plus

To enter this level students should be able to convey extremely basic information and use basic greetings. Their ability to communicate is limited to the most basic structures and vocabulary for tourist situations.

L3 - Elementary

To enter this level, students should be able to understand simple questions, statements in order to function in basic situations. Students should be able to deal with situations necessary to survive in an environment where the target language is spoken e.g. travel, accommodation, shopping, socializing. Their comprehension of the language is also limited. They use mainly present tense, with some set phrases in the past tense.

L4 – Lower Intermediate

To enter this level, students should be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at he satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. They should be able to introduce themselves and others and also ask and answer questions about personal details such as their lives, people they know and things they have. They should be able to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

L5 - Intermediate

Students should be able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). They should be able to communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. They should be able to describe, in simple terms, aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters regarding areas of immediate need.

L6 - Upper Intermediate

To enter this level, students should be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. They should be able to deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. They should also be able to produce simple, connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest and describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
