This article tells the story of Alina, a Polish student who joined our Spanish school for one week in July/August. During her stay in Puerto Real, a charming town near Cádiz city, Alina followed personalized Spanish courses designed to help her learn Spanish for work, improve her fluency, and strengthen her confidence in speaking Spanish.
Rather than choosing traditional Spanish language schools with large classes or an intensive Spanish course, Alina decided to learn Spanish through private tuition and daily lessons while living with a host teacher rather than a host family. I am Óscar, Spanish teacher and homestay host, with experience teaching Spanish lessons through immersion-based courses.
Alina my student for this concerned SHIP week was a Polish citizen.
She has been studying Spanish for around two years and arrived with a solid B1 level. Although she preferred not to talk about her academic background, she clearly demonstrated strong motivation and a clear objective to learn Spanish well enough to teach it in the future.
Her interests include history, yoga, meditation, and meaningful conversations. These interests played a key role in how she connected with the local culture, the people, and the learning process during her stay.

Pretérito Indefinido
She practised talking about:
- The last weekend
- Her last holidays
- Important moments in her biography
Pretérito Imperfecto
Through storytelling activities such as “Mi primer beso”, Alina learned how to describe past situations and anecdotes.
Pretérito Perfecto
Using expressions like ya, todavía no, and aún no, she described what she had done and what she had not done during the week.
Present Subjunctive
She learned to give advice and suggestions, an essential skill for professional communication.
By the end of the course, Alina demonstrated excellent command of Spanish verb tenses and a noticeably broader vocabulary.
Cultural Activities and Learning Outside the Classroom
One of the strengths of our Spanish school in Cádiz is the integration of cultural activities into the learning process.
Playa de la Victoria – Cádiz
Alina quickly fell in love with the beach. She spent hours in the sea, enjoying the water and the sun. At one point, she even got lost for five minutes due to the crowds, a funny moment that became a perfect storytelling exercise in Spanish.
Los Toruños – Puerto Real
During a visit to the natural park, Alina learned new vocabulary such as sendero and senderismo. Although the heat and tiredness limited the walk, the experience was rich in language and cultural exchange.
Cádiz City Tour
Walking through the old town, visiting the Catedral de Cádiz, and exploring hidden streets helped Alina connect deeply with the city’s history and architecture. She was particularly fascinated by the stones and ancient buildings, constantly commenting on their beauty.
Cueva del Pájaro Azul
The stones and atmosphere of this historic space left a strong impression on her, reinforcing her love for Cádiz’s cultural heritage.
Puerto de Santa María
Visits to the Basílica Mayor and the Castillo de San Marcos allowed her to explore more Andalusian history, while practising descriptive language and past tenses.
Life in Puerto Real: Sea, Sports, and Socialising
Puerto Real offers a calm environment ideal for studying Spanish. Close to sports areas, a soccer field, and even a roller skating rink, the town provides many ways to relax after classes.
Alina particularly enjoyed swimming and jokingly earned the nickname “el pato” because she refused to leave the sea. The sea became her favourite classroom.
She also loved talking with Fernando about climate change, yoga, and meditation. On one occasion, they even meditated together, showing how language connects people beyond words.
Community, New Friends, and Social Interaction
Although Alina studied alone, many students enjoy meeting other students, making new friends, and sharing experiences. Even without a large group, Alina interacted constantly with family members and locals.
She connected especially well with Yolanda, my sister-in-law, and they talked endlessly. These social interactions helped her improve fluency naturally and confidently.
