When Ronan arrived in Puerto Real, a quiet town on the edge of Cadiz (Cádiz with accent in Spanish), he was not looking for a typical course. At 61, his goal was clear: improve his Spanish for real-life communication and professional use. But what he experienced during his Spanish immersion in Cadiz for 60 became something much deeper.
Living near the Costa de la Luz, surrounded by beautiful beaches, historic streets, and daily conversation, Ronan quickly discovered that learning Spanish here is not about studying—it is about living.
Meet Ronan – Experience Meets Curiosity
Ronan, a Dutch professional with a background in engineering and medicine, brought a wealth of knowledge into every conversation. From the very beginning, our discussions went beyond simple language practice.
We talked about global issues, world history, and cultural perspectives, often comparing life in the Netherlands with Spain. These conversations naturally took place while walking through the old town, sitting in plaza de las flores, or enjoying a quiet moment near the Atlantic Ocean.
His level of Spanish was already strong, but what he needed was confidence and fluency. And Cadiz, one of the oldest city destinations in Western Europe, offered the perfect setting.
Learning Spanish Through Daily Life in Cadiz
In a Spanish homestay immersion program (SHIP), the classroom is everywhere. From morning routines to evening walks, every moment becomes an opportunity to speak.
During his stay in Puerto Real, Ronan experienced real Spanish life:
- Going to the gym and speaking Spanish naturally
- Walking through the old town and exploring ancient buildings
- Visiting Genovés Park, especially beautiful on a sunny day
- Exploring natural parks across the Cadiz region
- Sharing meals and conversations in local tapas bars and at home
We often walked along the narrow peninsula jutting into the Atlantic Ocean, where the city sits almost at sea level, surrounded by water and history.
Every walk through the old town—often along the same street—became a lesson in vocabulary, storytelling, and expression.
Visiting Cadiz: History, Culture, and the Old Town
Visiting Cadiz is like stepping into a living museum. The city walls, historic sites, and lively plazas create a perfect environment for language immersion.
We explored key locations together:
- Plaza de España, with its historical significance
- Plaza de San Juan de Dios, near the town hall
- Plaza Candelaria and Plaza San Antonio, full of local life
- The vibrant plaza de las flores, a favorite place for conversation
Walking through the old town, Ronan practiced describing places, asking questions, and sharing opinions. The repetition of real-life interaction helped him build confidence naturally.
We also visited the Catedral de Cádiz, with its golden dome overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and discussed its history, including its connection to composer Manuel de Falla.
Nearby, the old cathedral and surrounding streets added depth to our conversations about culture and religion.
Roman History and Cultural Discovery
Cadiz is home to incredible historical landmarks, and these became part of our daily lessons.
We explored the famous Roman Theatre, one of the largest in Spain, also known as the ancient roman theatre. Talking about the roman ruins, the roman amphitheatre, and the evolution of the city helped Ronan expand his historical vocabulary.
We also visited the Museo de Cádiz, where artifacts from ancient civilizations tell the story of this oldest city in Western Europe.
These experiences made Spanish come alive—not through textbooks, but through real stories and places.
La Caleta Beach and Coastal Life
No Cadiz visit is complete without time at the beach, especially La Caleta Beach.
We spent several afternoons at Playa de la Caleta, walking between Castillo de Santa Catalina and Castillo de San Sebastián. The setting, featured in the James Bond film Die Another Day, sparked conversations about film, history, and culture.
Watching how the sun hits the ocean during sunset created unforgettable moments. The sea views, the relaxed atmosphere, and the sound of waves made speaking Spanish feel effortless.
We often referred to both La Caleta and Playa de la Caleta during our conversations, reinforcing vocabulary naturally.
Castles, Towers, and Panoramic Views
Cadiz offers spectacular viewpoints and historical structures that enrich the learning experience.
We visited:
- Castillo de Santa Catalina, a fortress full of history
- Castillo de San Sebastián, connected by a scenic path
- Torre Tavira, also known as Tavira Tower, offering incredible sea views
From the top of Torre Tavira, we observed the city, its flat roof architecture, and the unique layout of this narrow peninsula.
We also talked about Gran Teatro Falla, a cultural landmark connected to Manuel de Falla, and its importance in local traditions like Holy Week and festivals.
Food, Markets, and Local Flavours
Food played an essential role in Ronan’s immersion. We visited the central market, also known as Mercado Central, one of the oldest in Spain. Here, Ronan practiced ordering food, asking prices, and learning vocabulary related to seafood and produce.
We also explored local tapas bars, including Taberna Casa Manteca, where he tasted traditional dishes like fried fish and local specialties.
One of his favorite drinks was tinto de verano, which became part of our relaxed evening conversations.
Exploring Beyond Cadiz: Day Trips and Culture
Living in Cádiz allows easy access to nearby destinations, and we took advantage of that.
We visited:
- Sanlúcar de Barrameda, famous for its culture and horse races
- Jerez de la Frontera, known for wine and tradition
- Chiclana de la Frontera, with its coastal charm
- Vejer de la Frontera and Arcos de la Frontera, stunning white villages
- The natural beauty of Doñana National Park
Each day trip added new vocabulary and cultural understanding, making the experience richer and more dynamic.
From Student to Confident Speaker
Ronan arrived with knowledge—but he left with confidence.
By the end of his stay, he could:
✔ Speak fluently in real-life situations
✔ Express complex ideas clearly
✔ Engage in deep conversations
✔ Communicate comfortably with locals
The transformation happened naturally, through constant interaction and immersion in the city, the beach, and daily life.
A Personal Connection Beyond Language
Hosting Ronan in Puerto Real, Cadiz, was more than a teaching experience.
We shared stories, perspectives, and meaningful conversations. Walking through the old town, sitting in plaza de, or enjoying quiet moments near the beach, we built a genuine connection.
He arrived as a student—but left as a friend.
