Spending a day in Tarragona is always special, but welcoming guests and sharing the experience with them makes it truly meaningful. Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting Mónica, the founder and director of Spanish Express, and Jane, a SHIP student visiting Barcelona from the United States.
Mónica thought that spending a day in Tarragona would be a wonderful bonus for Jane, giving her the opportunity to explore another region of Catalonia beyond Barcelona. It was the perfect way to experience a more authentic and relaxed side of Spain while enjoying true cultural immersion. Tarragona is also a popular location for Spanish immersion programs, which include options for intensive courses and combined culture-language experiences, and are available for adults.
A Warm Welcome and Introduction to Spanish Courses at a Spanish Language School in Torredembarra
Our day began in Torredembarra, where I welcomed Mónica and Jane into my home. For me, hosting is not just about providing accommodation—it is about sharing my culture, my lifestyle, and creating a space where guests feel comfortable and at home.
The Spanish school in Tarragona prepares students for official Spanish exams such as DELE and other recognized certifications. Teachers at the Spanish school provide guidance through exam structure, practice tests, and specific preparation strategies for DELE, ensuring students are well-prepared for these official foreign language qualifications.
I showed them around my house and introduced them to daily life here. For Jane, it was a great opportunity to experience how people live in a smaller coastal town, away from the busy pace of Barcelona. These moments are what make a homestay experience so valuable, as staying with a host teacher allows students to immerse themselves in the local culture and practice Spanish daily, connecting with the culture on a deeper level.
Afterwards, we took a walk around Torredembarra. The town has a calm and welcoming atmosphere, with quiet streets and a strong sense of community. It offers a true taste of Spanish life, something that many visitors appreciate when looking for a more authentic experience.
Spanish Courses and Programs
At my Spanish language school in Tarragona, I really believe in offering something for everyone who wants to learn Spanish. We have courses for all ages and backgrounds because learning should feel welcoming no matter where you start. Whether someone is just beginning or already knows quite a bit, there is always a good fit here. The teachers I work with in Spanish Express are experienced and focus on making classes interactive so students feel confident as they learn. This approach makes a big difference because language learning works best when people feel comfortable and engaged.
We offer General Spanish and specialized programs like Spanish for business, tourism, and DELE exam preparation because different people have different goals. The way we structure everything focuses on real-life communication rather than just textbook learning. Students learn grammar and vocabulary, but they also get the fluency they need to actually use Spanish in everyday situations.
Enjoying a Delicious Local Lunch
We then stopped for lunch at a restaurant in the main square. Sitting outside, we enjoyed the warm Mediterranean weather and the relaxed atmosphere that makes this region so special.
The food was delicious, full of fresh flavours and traditional Catalan ingredients. Sharing a meal together is an important part of Spanish culture, and it gave us time to talk, laugh, and get to know each other better. The lunch provided a perfect opportunity for conversation in Spanish, allowing Jane to practice speaking and pick up new vocabulary in a natural setting. For Jane, it was more than just lunch—it was another step into experiencing everyday life in Spain.
Discovering Tarragona’s Rich History
In the afternoon, we travelled to Tarragona, a city I always enjoy sharing with visitors because of its incredible history and beautiful setting by the Mediterranean Sea. Tarragona is a bilingual city where two languages, Spanish and Catalan, are spoken daily. Catalan is not only central to local culture but is also one of the most spoken languages within the European Union.
We spent the afternoon and evening exploring the city centre and its historic streets. One of the highlights was visiting the Roman Theatre of Tarragona, where you can truly feel the legacy of the Roman Empire. Cultural immersion programs in Tarragona frequently include visits to landmarks like the Roman walls and workshops on Spanish cuisine, offering opportunities to expand your language knowledge and improve pronunciation through real-life practice.
Walking through Tarragona is like stepping back in time, yet at the same time, the city is full of life. We explored the old town, admired the architecture, and enjoyed the lively atmosphere as the evening approached. Tarragona offers a perfect balance between history, culture, and modern Mediterranean living.
The Value of Cultural Immersion in Spanish Language
For me, hosting experiences like this is always rewarding. It is not just about showing places, but about creating meaningful connections and sharing culture in a genuine way.
For Jane, the day was an opportunity to experience Spain beyond the classroom. For Mónica, as founder and director, it was a rewarding moment to see the programme’s purpose come to life: helping students connect with Spanish language, culture, and everyday life in a meaningful way.
Cultural immersion allows visitors to feel part of the community rather than just observers. It transforms travel into a deeper and more personal experience that stays with them long after they leave.
A Day of Connection and Discovery
As the day continued into the evening, we enjoyed everything Tarragona had to offer. The streets became more vibrant, people gathered outdoors, and the city took on a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
What made the day truly special was not just the places we visited, but the connection we shared. Walking together, exchanging stories, and enjoying simple moments made the experience unforgettable.
A Truly Memorable Day by the Mediterranean Sea
Welcoming Mónica and Jane and spending the day together in Tarragona was a truly memorable experience for me. It reminded me why I love teaching Spanish and hosting students from all over the world—because it brings people together and allows cultures to be shared in a natural and authentic way.
Experiences like this show that travel is not just about visiting places, but about the people you meet and the moments you share.
For anyone considering a homestay in Spain, Tarragona offers the perfect opportunity to feel at home while discovering a new culture in a genuine and enriching way.
