What does it really mean to learn Spanish in Cadiz? It means speaking at the breakfast table, practising at the market, and discovering that every walk through the old town is a lesson. That is the power of Spanish in Cadiz through our Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP), and no language school can replicate it.
My name is Óscar, and I am a host teacher at our Spanish school in Cadiz, based in Puerto Real — a town within walking distance of the bay and just minutes walk from the sea. I welcome students from across Europe and beyond to live and study Spanish in Cadiz inside my home. In our school in Cadiz, students do not stay with a typical host family. They are surrounded by the Spanish language from the moment they arrive.
On this occasion, that student was Scottie, and his journey across one extraordinary week left me genuinely proud.
Who Is Scottie?
Scottie is an exceptional young man with admirable values, a warm personality, and a sharp sense of humour. He arrived in Puerto Real to study Spanish in Cadiz with a clear purpose: to build real Spanish language skills through daily immersion and authentic conversation. From the very first day, his open-minded nature set the tone.
He was never afraid to speak, practise new vocabulary, or face everyday situations with courage. His emotional maturity and ability to build sincere connections made this week truly special. Students like Scottie remind you why teaching in Cadiz matters.
The Week’s Classes and Lessons
Scottie followed a structured general Spanish course tailored to his level. Each day, class time covered grammar, grammatical aspects, and guided conversation from daily routines to the Pretérito Indefinido, the Pretérito Perfecto, and the Future Tense. Every topic helped him absorb new concepts in a personal and engaging way.
Conversations were always part of each session. Scottie practised speaking from day one, building vocabulary alongside his growing confidence.
Our Teaching Approach and Spanish Courses in Cadiz
Our Spanish courses align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), a globally recognised standard that assesses language proficiency on a six-point scale, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). It measures skills in speaking, reading, listening, and writing, making it easy to compare language qualifications across countries and institutions.
A level test and placement test shape the Spanish intensive course our teachers design for each student. Unlike intensive courses at a partner school where students share lessons with other students, our classes run in small groups or one-to-one. Language courses here have no strict minimum age, everyone is welcome.
Discovering Cadiz: Excursions and Cultural Activities
Between lessons, Scottie and I explored Cadiz together. Every outing was an extension of our Spanish intensive learning, real cultural activities where practice exercises happened naturally in local culture, away from any classroom or school facilities.
The Historic Center and Old Town
Cadiz is one of the oldest city destinations in western Europe, and its historic center carries that history in every step. We walked through the old town past stunning historic buildings and into the heart of the city center. Speaking Spanish in Cádiz here felt natural. Scottie practised asking locals for directions, reading signs, and describing the architecture with growing confidence.
Genovés Park
Genovés Park sits just minutes walk from the city center with open views over the sea and the sun above. Surrounded by exotic trees, it offered a relaxed atmosphere ideal for free conversation. It is a favourite among Cadiz students for a reason, calm, beautiful, and perfect for speaking without pressure.
The Roman Theatre
We visited Cadiz’s ancient Roman Theatre, one of the most remarkable sites in all of Spain. We explored its history and discussed its place in Spanish literature and cultural heritage. These conversations gave Scottie rich vocabulary in context history, storytelling, and culture woven naturally into every lesson.
The Central Market
Visiting the Central Market is always part of our language courses in Cadiz. Scottie practised ordering, asking prices, and building vocabulary for local produce and seafood. Speaking directly with vendors gave him real-life practice that no textbook or school teaching can fully replicate. It is Spanish learning at its most direct.
A Tapas Night to Remember
Our tapas night brought the teaching full circle. Scottie chatted with my friends and relatives, made new friends, and ordered food entirely in Spanish. Learning flowed effortlessly across the table, that relaxed atmosphere is exactly what makes Spanish in Cadiz so effective for every student who visits.
The Beach and La Caleta
Cadiz is surrounded by the sea on almost every side, and the beach is always within walking distance. We walked along La Caleta under the sun and Scottie reflected on his week in Spanish. The city also offers sports areas, a soccer field, a roller skating rink, and cafés with tv screens showing Spanish programmes. With strong accommodation options and a perfect location, Cadiz supports full immersion around the clock.
Scottie’s Spanish Transformation
Scottie arrived with limited Spanish. By Saturday, he had acquired a vocabulary of over 100 words, mastered three tenses, and learned to effectively communicate with real confidence. He spoke with my family, made new friends across the city, and handled everyday situations entirely in the Spanish language.
His progress is a powerful example of what immersion in Cadiz delivers. When a student is immersed in Spanish every day, communication skills grow faster than in any standard school environment. Scottie leaves Spain as a stronger, more confident, and more connected person.
