As a host teacher at Spanish Express, I welcome international students from around the world who want to learn Spanish in Valencia in a real and meaningful way. Through our immersion program in Valencia, I help students improve their Spanish language through daily conversation, guided Spanish lessons, and authentic cultural immersion.
In our Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP), we are not a traditional language school or a typical Spanish school. Our students do not stay with a regular host family. Instead, they live and learn with certified, native Spanish teachers.
This is very important to us. We believe students learn best when they are supported by highly qualified teachers who are experienced in teaching Spanish and who understand the full learning process.
Our Spanish courses in Valencia are designed for students who want more than a classroom experience. They want to live the language, understand local culture, and feel more confident in everyday situations. That is exactly what happened with Paige.

Meet Paige: A Student with a Personal Reason to Study Spanish
I had the pleasure of hosting Paige, a 27-year-old American student who came to Valencia, Spain, with a very personal goal. She wanted to learn Spanish so she could communicate with her Colombian partner’s family and feel more comfortable speaking with native speakers.
Paige is creative, caring, and curious. She enjoys gardening, board games, writing, and singing. She also loves trying new food, going for walks, and spending time with friends and family. Her professional path is connected to supporting people with disabilities, which says a lot about her kind and thoughtful personality.
She joined our Spanish school in Valencia because she wanted a real connection with the language, not just grammar exercises. She wanted to speak Spanish in real life, in a natural and relaxed way. For students like Paige, full immersion makes a big difference.
Paige’s Spanish Level and Progress
Paige started her course at the A1 level. After two weeks of full immersion, she reached A2. This was a fantastic experience for her, and her progress was so strong that she decided to continue with online Spanish classes after returning home.
Her case shows that motivated students can make real progress in a short time. Of course, complete mastery takes time, but great improvement can begin very quickly when the student is involved in the language every day.
Our program follows a communicative approach, in line with modern language teaching standards such as those valued by the Instituto Cervantes. This means that students learn to use the language in real contexts, not just study rules in isolation.

Daily Spanish Lessons and Real-Life Practice
Paige’s program included both formal and informal practice. In our daily Spanish lessons, we worked on general Spanish, focusing especially on verb conjugation in the present, past, and future. She also completed oral and written work using the Spanish Express verb workbook.
These private Spanish lessons gave her structure, while informal conversation gave her freedom. During meals, car journeys, and daily routines, Paige practiced the Spanish language in natural situations. This helped her build confidence and improve her language skills.
Unlike many Spanish schools, our students are not surrounded by large groups all day. However, they still meet other people during activities, meals, and outings. This gives them chances to connect not only with teachers but also sometimes with other international students or fellow students, depending on the schedule.
This mix of structure and spontaneity is what makes our Spanish language courses so effective. It helps students learn in a way that feels useful, personal, and enjoyable.

Discovering the Old Town of Valencia
One of our first visits was to the old town of Valencia, a vibrant historic centre full of beauty, history, and character. Paige explored the Cathedral in Plaza de la Virgen, the Basilica, the Serrano Towers, and the famous Lonja de la Seda, also known as the Silk Exchange.

She also visited L’Almoina Museum, where she learned about the Roman, Muslim, and Iberian past of the city. Walking through the narrow streets and small squares gave her a better understanding of the history, culture, and daily rhythm of Spanish life.

During this visit, Paige also saw the celebration of the Virgen de los Desamparados. The parade in traditional dress made a strong impression on her. It was a lovely way to experience Spanish culture in a real and emotional setting.
The City of Arts and Sciences and Weekly Activities
Another highlight of our weekly activities was the City of Arts and Sciences. Paige was fascinated by the architecture of Santiago Calatrava and loved walking through this modern part of the city. We also visited exhibition spaces, including the Ágora.

This visit gave us many chances to talk in Spanish about art, architecture, ideas, and modern life. It helped Paige expand her vocabulary beyond the usual beginner topics.
This is one reason why Valencia offers such a rich setting for language learning. It is the perfect city for students who want to combine lessons with exploration. There is always something new to see, discuss, and enjoy.

Gilet, Sagunto, and Life Beyond the Classroom
Because Paige stayed with me in Gilet, she also discovered a quieter side of life in Spain. Gilet has a unique charm, and it gave her the chance to enjoy the natural surroundings and see what daily life is like outside the busy center.

We also visited Sagunto, where she explored the Roman castle and theatre. These visits helped her understand the deep history of the area while continuing to use her Spanish in a natural way.
This is something all our students value. They do not only learn inside a classroom or a school building. They experience the language in the real world. That supports cultural integration and gives students more confidence when they return to their own work environment or daily life and want to keep using Spanish.

Bike Tour, Beach, and Central Market
Paige also enjoyed a bike tour through the Turia Gardens and the area near the City of Arts and Sciences. Later, we reached the beach, where she relaxed, had a sandwich, and enjoyed the sea breeze.

Another special outing was the Central Market. There, Paige explored one of the most famous places in Valencia and bought olive oil, saffron, and cured ham. The Central Market is always a great place to practice Spanish because students must ask questions, understand products, and interact in real ways.

These experiences help students handle everyday situations with more confidence. That is essential when learning a new language in a foreign country.
Albufera, Horchata, and Paella with Friends
Paige loved our visit to Albufera Natural Park. As someone who enjoys nature, she was very happy to see birds, peaceful water, and the beautiful landscape. It was an unforgettable experience and a chance to keep speaking in a calm, relaxed way.

She also tried horchata with fartons and enjoyed a lovely meal at La Pinada in Gilet. Food is always an important part of our cultural activities, because it opens conversations and helps students connect with culture in a simple and joyful way.

One of the most memorable moments was sharing paella and card games with my family and friends. This was super fun and very useful for Paige’s confidence. She laughed, listened, and joined in naturally. Moments like this show that language grows best when it is connected to real life.
