There is something quietly moving about watching two people take on a new language together, celebrating each small win, laughing through every stumble, and discovering a country side by side.

As a host teacher with Spanish Express, I open my home in Valencia each week to adults from around the world through our Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP), where students learn Spanish in real life rather than only inside a classroom.

This past April, I welcomed Chris and Heather, a married couple from Indianapolis who chose full immersion in Spain, a true Spanish immersion for couples, over other programs offered by competitors.

Meet Chris & Heather: A Couple United by a Love of Spanish

Chris and Heather, both in their late forties, share a deep love of the Spanish language, tennis, and animals, especially their cherished pet. Their dream is to travel across Spanish-speaking countries and connect with Spanish speakers in real, local communities.

Chris already sat comfortably at an advanced Spanish level and loves practising with native speakers from South America, building his own organised vocabulary lists. Heather joined as a beginner, determined to communicate in everyday situations and excited to taste authentic local cuisine.

A Real Home, Not a Lecture Hall

In just one week, both grew noticeably more relaxed about speaking aloud. They learned that real language is messy and fun, and that even a short period away can build confidence in a way nothing else does.

Personalised Lessons for Two Different Language Skills Levels

Because the couple was at different stages, their Spanish lessons were tailored individually. These private classes ran alongside shared Spanish classes in the form of interactive learning during mealtimes and excursions, so the two could grow together.

Chris focused on the subjunctive mood and transformation verbs such as ponerse, quedarse, hacerse and llegar a ser, stretching his Spanish skills toward topics like immigration and the environment. Heather built core grammar, present, present perfect, and past tenses, strengthening her language skills and speaking skills with our Verb Workbook.

A Traditional Welcome: Language and Culture With Paella and Friends

Their week began the perfect Spanish way: a homemade paella shared with my friends and neighbours, washed down with sangría. Surrounded by lively chatter, Chris dived straight into conversation while Heather soaked up the sounds around her.

This warm welcome served up not only delicious food but a relaxed first taste of real Spanish. It was the kind of sun-soaked afternoon that turns nervous learners into eager talkers.

Roman Heritage in Sagunto

A gentle barbecue afternoon led us up to the Roman Castle of Sagunto, where Chris and Heather took in sweeping views of the Mediterranean. The site’s story stretches back more than two thousand years.

We also visited the ancient Roman theatre, and the couple loved how naturally the conversation flowed among the ruins. Moments like these tie history and culture together far better than any textbook ever could.

Exploring Valencia’s Historic Center

Next we wandered Valencia’s old town, visiting La Lonja, the Cathedral, Plaza Redonda and the bustling local markets. Chris was delighted to buy authentic Iberian ham at the Central Market.

These streets gave the couple endless chances to use Spanish in everyday life, ordering, asking prices and reading signs. Strolling among locals, they began to notice the different accents that colour the language across regions.

Peace and Nature at La Albufera

A day trip to La Albufera, Spain’s largest freshwater lagoon, offered a peaceful contrast to the city. In the fishing village of El Palmar, Chris and Heather learned about the area’s ecology and traditions.

The afternoon ended with a calm sunset boat ride, an amazing experience that none of them will forget. Elaine, one of their fellow students that week, called it the highlight of our small group.

Modern Wonders: The City of Arts and Sciences

The futuristic City of Arts and Sciences felt like stepping into another century. At the Ágora building, the group toured the interactive “Espionage” exhibition, which blends real events with cinema.

Wandering its bright open spaces gave everyone fresh vocabulary and plenty to discuss. For Chris and Heather, it proved that learning never stops once you step outside the school walls.

An Evening of Flamenco

We closed the week with a passionate flamenco show. The heartfelt music and fiery dancing gave Chris and Heather an incredible experience and an emotional farewell to the culture they had come to love.

For a couple who arrived simply hoping to improve, it was the ideal finale, proof that the right cultural activities can turn a course into something unforgettable.
