“Keep my brain young.” Those were the words Julie used when she explained why she had flown from Flagstaff, Arizona, all the way to Spain to learn Spanish for the very first time.
That honest, hopeful reason is exactly the kind of motivation we love at Spanish Express, which is why I, Mónica, opened my home in Dosrius to welcome her in. As a native Spanish speaker and a highly qualified, experienced teacher, I shape the week around the learner in front of me.
And shaping Julie’s week was a real joy, because she arrived ready to embrace everything. This is the story of her Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP), told from a host teacher’s point of view, from her warm arrival to her confident departure.
Meet Julie – A Curious Beginner With Big Dreams
Julie is a vibrant learner who loves salsa and bachata dancing, hiking, yoga, gardening, and writing. That love of movement and nature made our peaceful village near Barcelona the perfect choice for her stay.
She came as a true beginner, unsure of her exact level, but completely clear about her purpose. She wanted to keep her mind sharp, prepare for a future life in Spain, and finally speak this beautiful foreign language in everyday situations.
Her goals were honest and human: improve her listening, build speaking confidence, and connect with the wider Spanish-speaking world. Few students arrive with such genuine motivation.
Why a Spanish Homestay Beats a Traditional Language School
Most people picture a classroom when they imagine studying Spanish. A homestay flips that idea completely, turning the whole house and town into a living language school for the learner.
Unlike a typical Spanish language school located in a busy city with a large class size, here the everyday language never switches off. Julie practised Spanish during breakfast, walks, cooking, and shopping, surrounded by native Spanish speakers all day.
This kind of Spanish immersion accelerates progress in a way that group Spanish classes, ordinary Spanish schools, and apps simply cannot match. Real life became her best teacher.
Personalised Lessons Built Around Julie’s Level
Because Julie was starting fresh, Lydia, my teaching assistant, and I designed a gentle yet effective learning plan. Our private lessons and personalized Spanish lessons focused first on building a strong, confident foundation in everyday Spanish.
We began with a cognates notebook, where Julie happily discovered how many words she already recognized, plus a few tricky “false friends.” Brain Box games and our own materials covered essential vocabulary about weather, food, and shops.
This is what makes teaching Spanish this way so different from standard language courses. Every activity matched her pace, her interests, and her real-world needs.
Mastering Verbs Through Games and Practice
Verbs can intimidate any beginner, so our intensive courses make them fun rather than frightening. Through our holiday workbook, Julie worked steadily through ten full units across one week.
She learned to conjugate the entire present tense beautifully and even began tackling the past, recognising the pretérito indefinido with ease. Verb Bingo turned grammar into laughter and friendly competition.
Constant practice speaking helped her absorb verb meanings naturally. These small daily wins built the confidence she had been searching for.
Excursion to Dosrius – History on Our Doorstep
Learning Spanish should never stay trapped in a classroom. Our first cultural excursion took Julie through the charming heart of Dosrius itself, weaving language practice into every step.
We visited the village church, the town hall, and the historic “El Comú” washhouse, describing each place aloud in Spanish. The artistic forest of Ernest Borràs added a creative, magical touch.
Walking and talking together, she practised real conversation rather than memorised phrases. The rich culture and history of Catalonia made each new word stick instantly.
Excursion to Argentona – A Living Spanish Lesson
The nearby town of Argentona gave us a wonderfully rich day of discovery. Every corner offered fresh vocabulary and a new reason to keep speaking Spanish.
We explored Casa Mora, the old tram, the Càntirs Route, and the fascinating Càntir Museum. We also visited the Sant Domènec fountain, the town hall, Casa Puig i Cadafalch, the market square, and Sant Julià church.
Julie asked questions, described what she saw, and chatted with locals. These cultural activities are Spanish immersion at its most rewarding and most fun.
Lunch at Dolce Vita and Relaxed Free Time
Not every moment was structured, and that balance matters enormously. On arrival day, we shared a welcoming lunch at Dolce Vita in the lovely Port of Mataró, just minutes from home.
Ordering food and chatting at the table became Julie’s very first real Spanish conversation in Spain. Later in the week, a free afternoon let her rest, write, and explore independently.
Fun activities and quiet pauses gave her space to absorb everything. Real life and language learning blended seamlessly throughout her stay.
Julie’s Transformation in Just One Week
The change in Julie over one short week was genuinely moving to witness. She arrived nervous and silent, yet left speaking with warmth and confidence.
By the end of her course, Julie could conjugate the present tense, recognise past tenses, and hold simple everyday conversations. Her listening had sharpened, and her fear of mistakes had melted away.
She was not fluent yet, but she was firmly on her way. That sense of progress is the heart of every unforgettable experience we offer.
