Some students arrive in Spain for the very first time, nervous and unsure of every word. Others come back, already in love with the country and ready to push their Spanish further. Paul belonged firmly to the second group.
I am Pilar, a host teacher with Spanish Express, and I welcome learners into my home in Gilet, just outside Valencia. Through the Spanish Homestay Immersion Programme (SHIP), I help students live the language in real, everyday situations rather than only studying it.
This time, my returning guest was Paul, who joined our programme for two weeks to sharpen his conversational Spanish and finally feel confident with his verb tenses.
Meet Paul: A Returning Learner With a Clear Goal
Paul had already completed a SHIP immersion with Spanish Express in Cádiz, so he arrived in Valencia knowing exactly what he wanted. His goal was clear: speak more naturally and handle past and present tenses with real confidence.
That earlier experience gave him a strong foundation to build on. From the moment he landed, he was ready to practise, ask questions, and throw himself into daily life in Spanish.
His curiosity and friendly nature made him a joy to host, and they shaped a productive, genuinely enjoyable two weeks.
A Homestay Where Spanish Never Stops
The heart of SHIP is simple: learning does not end when the lesson does. In my home, Spanish flows through breakfast, car journeys, cultural visits, and every shared meal.
Paul practised constantly in these real-life moments, reinforcing his vocabulary and building fluency around everyday topics. Speaking naturally throughout the day helped him grow comfortable using both present and past tenses.
He also chatted in Spanish with other members of my family, especially over a delicious paella, turning ordinary conversation into full cultural immersion.
Structured Lessons: Verbs, Tenses, and Real Confidence
Alongside the conversation, Paul worked steadily through the Spanish Express Verb Workbook. We covered the present tense, including regular, irregular, reflexive, and “gustar”-type verbs.
From there we moved into the past tenses, the present perfect, simple past, and imperfect, before exploring the near future with “ir a + infinitive”. Each topic built logically on the last.
His written tasks, from introducing his family to describing his daily routine, became the basis for guided conversation. We reviewed every piece carefully, with special attention to those tricky irregular verbs.
Paella With the Host Family
Paul’s Valencian adventure began at the table, with a traditional paella lunch prepared by my family. Sharing this iconic dish was the perfect introduction to local cuisine and culture.
In a warm, relaxed setting, he practised Spanish without pressure, surrounded by the kind of everyday chatter that makes a language stick. It was food, family, and language learning all at once.
Port Saplaya and a Taste of Horchata
Next we explored the colourful coastal town of Port Saplaya, strolling along its marina and soaking up the seaside atmosphere. Paul described it as charming and full of character.
He also tried horchata, the refreshing Valencian drink, for the first time and loved it. A quick stop at a local supermarket added a practical, real-world lesson in everyday Spanish.
The Historic Centre of Valencia
Wandering through Valencia’s vibrant old town, Paul admired the architecture of landmarks like La Lonja, the Cathedral, and the Museo de la Almoina. The streets themselves became a living classroom.
He enjoyed a free afternoon to explore at his own pace too. That evening brought something magical: a “Candlelight” concert featuring Vivaldi’s classical music in an unforgettable setting.
Lunch at Playa de la Malvarrosa
No visit to Valencia is complete without time by the sea. We enjoyed a relaxed lunch right on the beach at Playa de la Malvarrosa, taking in the Mediterranean views.
These easy, unhurried moments gave Paul natural openings to keep speaking, describing the scene, the food, and his plans in comfortable, flowing Spanish.
The City of Arts and Sciences
The futuristic City of Arts and Sciences left Paul genuinely amazed. Its bold architecture and interactive exhibitions made for one of the most striking days of the whole programme.
A highlight was the Dinosaur exhibition in L’Àgora, where he saw authentic dinosaur bones up close. It sparked plenty of curious conversation, all in Spanish, of course.
A Peaceful Day at La Albufera
We rounded off the immersion with a visit to the Albufera natural park, where Paul admired the beautiful landscapes and learned about the region’s ecosystem.
The day included a relaxed outdoor lunch under warm, sunny skies. It was the perfect calm finish to a rich cultural and natural adventure around Valencia.
Paul’s Progress: Greater Accuracy and Confidence
By the end of his stay, the combination of constant conversation, systematic verb work, and regular feedback had clearly paid off. Paul’s grasp of Spanish verb tenses was noticeably stronger.
He communicated with more accuracy and far more confidence than when he arrived. He met his goal of improving his conversational skills while deepening his understanding of Spanish culture.
His curiosity, commitment, and warmth made every moment worthwhile, and I would happily welcome him back for more.
