I’m Mónica, founder of Spanish Express and the host teacher who welcomes students into my family home in Dosrius, a peaceful town on Barcelona’s Maresme Coast. As a qualified teacher trainer, translator, and examiner, I have spent years teaching Spanish through real, everyday life.
This year I had the pleasure of welcoming Rebecca through our Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP), a warm, curious British learner who arrived ready to finally find her own Spanish voice.
Meet Rebecca: A Curious Learner from England
Rebecca is a lively early 70s lady from England, and a wonderfully curious lifelong learner. She had spent years working on the language and could read and understand it well, yet her Spanish level kept stalling in the same place.
Her dream was simple: to speak with greater fluency, in a warmer, more colloquial, more Spanish way. A keen gardener and nature lover who enjoys birdwatching, sewing, knitting and cooking, she felt right at home in our quiet corner of the countryside.

A Real-Life Spanish Shop in Llinars del Vallès
On Monday afternoon, after class with Marta, we drove to the Mercadona supermarket in Llinars del Vallès to do the weekly shop. It may sound ordinary, but a supermarket is one of the best classrooms there is.
Rebecca read labels, weighed up vegetarian options and chatted with me about meals for the week, all in Spanish. Moments like these are where you truly practice Spanish, folding the language into the rhythm of everyday life rather than keeping it on a page.
Exploring Barcelona and the Casa Amatller
Tuesday took us down to the city for a relaxed lunch and a gentle afternoon in the centre. Our highlight was the Casa Amatller, the modernist gem designed by Puig i Cadafalch on the elegant Passeig de Gràcia.
Wandering its rooms, Rebecca uncovered the rich history behind Barcelona’s modernist heritage and Catalan design. Ordering lunch, asking directions and reading the exhibits all became living Spanish culture lessons, proof of how well-chosen cultural activities turn sightseeing into confident, real communication.
Hiking Montnegre i el Corredor and the Coast at Mataró
Wednesday was made for Rebecca, who loves nature and birdwatching. We followed a gentle hiking route through the Parc del Montnegre i el Corredor, Spain’s first urban quiet park, pausing for birdsong and views at her own relaxed pace.
Later, we reached Mataró, where the Mediterranean Sea sparkled beside the port and seafront promenade. We strolled to the Nau Gaudí, the architect’s earliest work, soaking up local culture in the lively town centre while chatting away in Spanish.
Lunch at Can Pedragosa and the Canyamars Ice Well
Thursday brought a real treat: lunch at the restaurant Can Pedragosa, where Rebecca enjoyed hearty vegetarian dishes and ordered confidently in Spanish. Afterwards, we explored the centre of Dosrius and the fascinating ice well of Canyamars.
This centuries-old pou de glaç was once used to store winter ice, and standing inside this piece of local heritage, Rebecca asked questions, listened to the story and tried out new vocabulary. Authentic places like these make the language stick.
Argentona and the Artistic Forest of Dosrius
On Friday, my teaching assistants joined the fun. Laura guided Rebecca on a walking route through Argentona, a charming town famous for its fountains, museum and historic streets.
Lydia then led her into the artistic forest of Dosrius, a magical woodland dotted with sculptures hidden among the trees. These relaxed, fun activities gave Rebecca even more chances to chat naturally with different voices, turning the week into the kind of unforgettable experience that stays with you long after the train home.
The Host Teacher: The Heart of the Homestay
At the heart of every homestay is the host teacher. As a qualified teacher trainer, translator, and examiner, I bring a university degree and decades of classroom experience to each week, while also being your local host and guide.
Our small team of experienced teachers, Marta, Lydia, and Laura, keeps lessons warm and varied. We follow the levels set by the Cervantes Institute, and although a homestay is not an exam center, students often go on to sit official exams with real confidence.

By the ned of the week, the change in Rebecca was clear. She could speak Spanish far more spontaneously, reaching for the subjunctive and the colloquial turns she had once avoided.
Her language proficiency had not just grown on paper — it had come alive in real conversation. Most of all, she left believing she could keep going. That is the quiet power of immersion: one week of living the language often moves you further than months of foreign language study at home.
