You don’t always learn a foreign language fastest in a classroom. Sometimes the quickest way to soak up Spanish is simply to live it for a week on a sunlit Mediterranean island.

I’m Mónica, founder, director and a host teacher with Spanish Express. I run a Spanish homestay in Menorca through the Spanish Homestay Immersion Program (SHIP). My days blend genuine Spanish culture with the warmth of everyday family life.

This spring, I welcomed Sophie from Britain, who came to speak Spanish, swim in the sea, and discover the real island with me.

Meet Sophie

Sophie is a university tutor from Britain in her early 60s who has worked hard to study Spanish for the past two years. Arriving with an A2 level, she had clear learning goals from the start.

She wanted to understand more and reach real fluency, natural speaking, and confidence, not exams.

Travel can feel daunting for her, yet she came ready to embrace it. A keen swimmer with wide passions, from theatre to reading, Sophie was a wonderful guest.

A Fully Immersive Way to Learn Spanish

Between swims, Sophie chatted away in Spanish about the sea and the views.

Spending time on such a beautiful coast made practising effortless, and she even made friends along the way. For a keen swimmer, it was an amazing time, the relaxed kind of time students remember most.

Son Saura Beach

One of Sophie’s favourite outings took us south to Son Saura, one of Menorca’s last unspoilt bays. Backed by pine woods and dunes, its white sand and crystal-clear shallows felt almost Caribbean.

A passionate swimmer, Sophie was in her element, wading into the warm, gentle water again and again.

Between dips we sat in the shade and talked through her day in Spanish. Far from any resort, with only the sea for company, it was exactly the quiet, immersive afternoon she had hoped for.

Discovering Mahón with Arancha

A trip to Mahón, the island’s capital, revealed one of the world’s great natural harbours. Our Spanish teacher Arancha, joined us, adding fresh conversation.

We wandered the lively town, browsed the local markets, and soaked up the local culture and history over a long lunch.

Sophie used Spanish all day to explore, ask questions, and order food. Days like this let students visit places they would never reach alone, learning the language naturally.

Gin Xoriguer Distillery and Shop

Our day in Mahón ended at the Gin Xoriguer distillery, right on the quayside. Menorcan gin is a legacy of the island’s British years, so for Sophie it was a charming meeting of her two worlds.

We toured the copper stills and browsed the shop, where she sampled the herb-infused gins and the famous pomada.

Chatting with the staff in Spanish about flavours and recipes, Sophie practised the kind of real, useful Spanish no textbook ever teaches.

Wandering Ciutadella’s Old Town

On two evenings we explored Ciutadella’s historic streets, where every narrow street tells a story.

Sophie admired the historic port, the cathedral, and the elegant squares as we practised words about the town’s past and architecture.

These gentle walks became some of our richest conversations. Showing her the place I call home let Sophie taste authentic local life while speaking Spanish in genuine, relaxed moments.

Sa Farola Beach and Lighthouse

A gentle stroll along the harbour brought us to Sa Farola, the lighthouse standing guard at the mouth of Ciutadella’s port. The walk itself, with boats bobbing alongside, gave us plenty to chat about in Spanish.

By the lighthouse, Sophie cooled off in the small, sheltered swimming spot the locals love.

Watching the boats glide in and out, she described the scene to me in her own words. Simple moments like these, she said, were where her confidence grew most.

Castell de Sant Nicolau

At the entrance to the harbour rises the Castell de Sant Nicolau, an elegant octagonal watchtower built in the 1680s to guard the bay.

We climbed up as the afternoon light softened, and Sophie practised talking about the centuries-old stonework and the views.

From the battlements, the whole coastline opened out, a favourite spot for sunset on the island. Standing there, looking out to sea, Sophie strung together longer Spanish sentences than she ever had on day one.

A Beautiful Island to Explore

Menorca is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its wild nature makes the perfect setting for immersion.

Beyond our days together, the island offers UNESCO-listed treasures to discover, from the prehistoric Torre d’en Galmés to the historic Camí de Cavalls coastal path.

In her free time, between cultural activities and quiet swims, Sophie loved that one small island could hold so much. Exploring it, she felt how deeply language connect here in Spain.

Daily Life and Home-Cooked Meals

A large portion of Sophie’s progress happened around my table. We shared home-cooked lunches and dinners suited to her tastes, fresh fish, salads, vegetables, and other delicious food worth lingering over.

Woven into everyday routine, these dishes gave Sophie comfortable, constant practice. This is real Spanish home life, and exactly what makes a homestay so different from any classroom.
