I recently had the pleasure of welcoming Jessica, a 50-year-old paramedic from the United States, into my home in Dosrius, near Barcelona, as part of the Spanish Homestay Immersion Programme (SHIP).
Dosrius is a picturesque village located in the Maresme Coast, just a short distance from Barcelona. The area is known for its natural beauty, including the nearby Montnegre I el Corredor Natural Park, Spain’s First Urban Quiet Park.
From the very beginning, Jessica came with a clear purpose. Her aim was to improve her Spanish while learning more about the ambulance and pre-hospital emergency system in Spain. As a healthcare professional, she was also exploring whether she could eventually work in Spain and what steps would be required to make that possible. At the same time, she was curious about daily life in Spain, as she is considering moving here in the future.

Beyond her professional goals, Jessica has a creative and curious personality. She enjoys museums, concerts, reading, drawing, music, and art. She also loves nature and easy hiking, which made Dosrius the perfect place for her stay. Living with a host in a smaller town like Dosrius allowed her a more intimate experience of Catalan and Spanish culture.
Upon arrival, Jessica felt instantly welcomed by my family and our two adorable golden retrievers, which created a warm and friendly atmosphere. She described the environment with my family as a “second family” experience, making her feel comfortable and supported throughout her stay. She also had the opportunity to learn Spanish and culture from Lydia, one of my teaching assistant, as well as Sara, one of the first team members of Spanish Express, who has been with the company since 2003. Sara is a highly experienced Spanish teacher who specialises in Spanish for business, bringing valuable expertise to Jessica’s learning experience.

A Fully Immersive Way to Learn Spanish
One of the biggest advantages of a Spanish homestay is that learning doesn’t stop when the lesson ends—it becomes part of everyday life. Unlike language apps, which can feel artificial and limited, immersive, real-life practice with native speakers offers genuine conversation and cultural understanding.
During Jessica’s stay, we spoke Spanish as much as possible throughout the day. Lessons happen not just during formal study times, but also during breakfast, walks, and while planning activities—every moment became an opportunity to practice. Living with a native speaker allowed Jessica to practice Spanish 100% of the time, and being in a 100% Spanish-speaking household accelerated her vocabulary and fluency.
This constant exposure helped her gain confidence quickly through real conversations with a native speaker, which are invaluable for building both confidence and fluency. While initial communication may be challenging, this actually accelerates language skill development. She wasn’t just studying Spanish—she was living it. The relaxed and supportive environment also allowed her to feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and improving naturally step by step.
Personalized Lessons with Continuous Support
Jessica followed a personalized learning plan adapted to her A2 level, with a strong focus on communication and real-life use of Spanish. The structure of the course included personalized sessions tailored to Jessica’s level, learning speed, and interests. The program is known for its academic rigour, combining intensive coursework and detailed feedback to ensure a comprehensive learning experience.
We worked on:
- Vocabulary related to travel, daily life, and health
- Present and past tenses and reflexive verbs
- Structures such as verbs like gustar
- A cognates notebook, where she discovered many “false friends”
I provided personalized 1-on-1 instruction as Jessica’s teacher and host, ensuring individual attention and adaptability to her needs.
Throughout her stay, she also worked closely with Lydia, my Spanish teaching assistant. Lydia played an essential role in supporting her progress by reinforcing grammar, guiding conversation practice, and helping her build confidence when speaking. The combination of different teaching styles brought by three teachers ensured a balanced and engaging learning environment. Personalised feedback was provided throughout, helping Jessica target her specific needs.
As for my own approach, I’m a qualified teacher trainer, examiner, and qualified translator with experience in Spanish language courses, and I believe in using diverse teaching styles to create a balanced learning experience. When necessary, I’m strict to maintain academic focus—she’s strict, as some students say, but always approachable and supportive, making sure students feel comfortable and motivated.
Many reviews highlight the personal connection formed with host teachers, which enhances the overall homestay experience.

Learning Spanish Through Real Experiences in Barcelona
A key part of the programme is using Spanish in real-life situations, and our visit to Barcelona provided the perfect opportunity for exploring Barcelona city centre and experiencing its vibrant atmosphere. As part of her cultural excursions, Jessica visited iconic landmarks such as the Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas, Park Güell, and Sagrada Familia, as well as La Boquería. Walking through the charming old town of the Gothic Quarter, Jessica was immersed in the historical and picturesque heart of Barcelona.
During these activities, Jessica practiced Spanish naturally—asking questions, ordering food, and interacting in everyday situations, which helped build her confidence and fluency. We also took a deep dive into the cultural and historical significance of these sites, enriching her understanding of Barcelona’s heritage.
The visit was also joined by another member of the Spanish Express team, our Spanish teacher Sara, who has been with us since the foundation of the company in 2003. Sara specialises in Spanish for business and primarily works with corporate clients and individuals relocating to Spain, bringing valuable expertise and a different perspective to the experience.
We had lunch at Julivert Meu. This visit offered not only a meal but a meaningful cultural experience for my student. During lunch, she gained confidence communicating in a real restaurant setting—an essential skill for daily life in Spain. The restaurant itself is an iconic tavern, founded in 1970, with a rich history reflected in its stone walls and wooden beams. Over the years, it has welcomed countless visitors, including renowned figures such as Salvador Dalí, Montserrat Caballé, and Diego Maradona. This unique atmosphere, filled with stories of artists and dreamers, made the experience even more memorable and inspiring for her.
At the end of the day, we had time to explore La Pedrera, also known as Casa Milà, one of Barcelona’s most iconic landmarks, combining cultural discovery with independent language practice.
Barcelona is known for its lively streets and modernist architecture, including iconic landmarks like Casa Batlló and Sagrada Familia. Exploring Barcelona city centre and visiting these iconic landmarks provided Jessica with a rich cultural immersion

The Host Teacher: The Heart of the Homestay
At the center of the Spanish Homestay Immersion Program is the unique ‘teacher’s home’ experience, where students live and study directly within the local, authentic environment of the host teacher and her family. I am not only a native Spanish speaker but also a qualified teacher, teacher trainer, translator and Edexcel and SIELE examiner, bringing a unique blend of academic rigor and real-world expertise to every lesson. My teaching style is both structured and warm, ensuring that students feel supported while being challenged to grow.
Living with a host fosters lifelong connections and a sense of community, as students become part of our daily lives and traditions. However, living with a family also means following household rules and accepting a reduced level of autonomy compared to student housing, which helps create a respectful and harmonious environment for everyone.
My family home in Dosrius, nestled along the stunning Maresme coast, offers breathtaking views and a peaceful setting for focused learning. My lovely parents are always ready with a smile or a story, making students feel instantly welcomed. And of course, my adorable golden retriever, Samba, add a playful company to daily life—whether it’s a walk through the garden or a cozy evening in.
My family’s approach to hosting goes beyond just teaching Spanish; we open our home and hearts, sharing local traditions and guiding students through the charming old towns and even to the iconic Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. This combination of professional expertise and genuine hospitality is what makes each week at the Spanish homestay so special.

Spanish for Professionals: A Unique Learning Opportunity
Because Jessica is a paramedic, we included a specialized component focused on the Spanish emergency and paramedic system. The lessons had a strong academic focus, with a structured approach tailored to professionals seeking to improve their Spanish for specific career needs. The program ensures coverage of all the key content necessary for exam success, including core topics and translation skills.
Together, we explored:
- How ambulance services operate in Spain
- Key medical and emergency vocabulary
- Differences between the Spanish and U.S. systems
This was one of the most valuable parts of her experience, as it connected language learning directly to her professional field and future goals.
The SHIP immersion program is designed to combine academic learning with cultural exploration, making it more than just a revision course.
Cultural Immersion Beyond the Classroom
In addition to lessons, we explored the local area as part of the SHIP immersion programme, which is designed for Spanish students seeking immersive experiences. Engaging with local culture was a key part of each day, from strolling through quaint streets and sampling local cuisine to joining excursions to cultural sites that enriched the learning process. The SHIP program includes excursions with costs for food, transport, and tickets covered, making it a seamless and enriching experience.
We visited:
- The historic Pou de Glaç
- The Castle of Dosrius
- The beautiful Santuario del Corredor, perfect for easy hiking
- The charming town of Argentona, including its museum, fountains, and historic streets
- Visiting quaint towns in the region, such as the lovely coastal town of Mataró, known for its vibrant beach, picturesque port, and lively town center
Even simple daily activities, such as visiting the local supermarket, became valuable opportunities to practice Spanish in real contexts.
We also enjoyed meals at local restaurants, where Jessica continued building confidence while experiencing authentic cuisine. We hosts often provide homemade meals as well, giving guests the chance to enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine in a welcoming home environment.

Daily Life and Routine in Dosrius
Life here in Dosrius is designed to fully immerse my students in the Spanish language and culture from the moment they wake up.
We usually start the day with a relaxed breakfast together, often with local products, which already becomes a natural opportunity to speak Spanish in a comfortable setting. From there, our lessons begin—but they are far from traditional. While we do spend time working at the table, much of the learning happens organically throughout the day. We might practice Spanish during a walk in the countryside, while cooking, or even during a visit to the local market. In this way, everyday life becomes part of the learning process.
After the morning session, we share lunch together, sometimes with my family, creating a warm and supportive environment where students can continue practicing Spanish in a natural way. These moments are especially valuable, as they help build confidence and fluency without pressure.
In the afternoons, we often explore the area. Depending on the day, we might walk through Dosrius, visit nearby towns like Argentona or Mataró, or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings. These experiences allow students to connect with the culture while continuing to use Spanish in real situations.
Evenings are more relaxed and can include a variety of cultural activities. We might watch a Spanish film, play games, or enjoy a home-cooked meal together. It’s another opportunity to practice listening and speaking while experiencing authentic daily life in Spain.
For me, this daily routine is at the heart of the programme. It’s not just about studying Spanish—it’s about living it. Every moment is an opportunity for my students to build confidence, improve fluency, and truly experience Spanish culture in a meaningful and personal way.
